Sicily, Italy

Music

Sicily is a region where the music culture is very strong. Every city has their own band and choir and the hospitality is unique: people are extremely friendly. Not only are local bands, choirs and orchestras eager to share a concert, the Bellini Music Conservatory is a great option for exchange concerts and clinics. Other great venues include Baroque churches - they are among the most beautiful in Italy. Charming public piazzas offer superb spaces for outdoor concerts, especially in small towns such as Modica, Ragusa, Noto and Cefalù.

Culture

Situated in the midst of the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily is literally at a crossroads between North Africa, Europe, Greece and the Middle East. It is one of the few regions in Italy where you find a colorful mixture of Mediterranean (Greek, Roman, and Arabian) art, archeology and culture. Agriculture being its main economic activity, the food of Sicily is some of the best in Italy. Sicilian pastries, ice cream, fresh oranges, lemons and olives, chocolate from Modica and pistachios from Etna are sure to be a gastronomic delight. Keep in mind, the weather is ideal from February through November.

History

Sicily is packed with historic and archeological sites which hold great significance for a multitude of nations. Three-thousand years of world histories collide as you tour cathedrals built by Normans yet decorated in Islamic-style mosaic, visit temples of Greek goddesses in the backdrop of Roman amphitheaters, or take in Baroque-style palaces which lie within cities previously conquered by Arabs. Brush up on your history and don’t forget your camera!
