Italy

It must be the beauty of the Mediterranean that makes this incredible country home to some of the friendliest people in all of Europe. Beautiful, historic performance venues fill the map and Italian audiences continue to be ‘tops’ both in numbers and enthusiasm. From north to south, Italy offers wonderful sightseeing, shopping and delicious food.

Italy continues to be Gateway’s most popular destination. Here are a few activities groups are raving about:

  • Try it, you’ll like it - Italian Agriturismo: Visit an Italian Vineyard & Farm for a leisurely lunch, sampling the best Italy has to offer: olive oils, prosciutto, cheeses, olives and (if you’re of age) wine! Learn how they make these world renowned edibles for which Italy is so famous.
  • Sure Fire Fun – Leisure day in a Tuscan town: Tuscany’s picturesque hilltop towns are the perfect place to let your students spread their wings and explore. These walled cities are a maze of small, safe streets that often lead to a common piazza. The options are endless, but we highly recommend visiting Assisi, Siena or Lucca.
  • Most Educational - Venice City Tour: A tour of Venice may include both St. Mark’s Basilica and a tour of the Doge’s Palace. St. Mark’s unusual layout, with two choir lofts facing each other, led to the development of the Venetian choral style of multiple choirs and instrumental ensembles. Choirs may have an opportunity to perform in the basilica and instrumental groups may have a chance to hear such groups perform! Either one is a music opportunity not to be missed.

Step back in time with a tour through the gothic Doge’s Palace, former home of the Doge of Venice. In addition to the rooms filled with lavishly decorated rooms, the palace is probably best known for its connection to a prison via the Bridge of Sighs. Walk across the bridge yourself to see Cassanova’s cell and experience the plight of the prisoner.
