China

China is filled with treasures, tales of emperors, dynasties and ancient history. Perform in front of eager crowds and visit temples and palaces that date back into the previous millennium. It's a remarkable performance experience that's as memorable as seeing the Great Wall itself!

St. Olaf Orchestra in China 2012

The St. Olaf Orchestra will tour China in June 2012 and we are excited! Performances in first-class concert halls in Shanghai, Xi’an, Zhengzhou and Beijing create the backbone of the tour.

Around these performances, their 14 day itinerary is a line up of once-in-a-lifetime sightseeing, starting with the vibrant sights of Shanghai. Steamed dumplings from colorful markets & bazaars, pristinely manicured ponds & courtyards of sacred gardens, gravity-defying stunts of the acrobatic shows, and even silk worms at the silk factory all await the group during their first few days in China.

On to Hangzhou, the students will experience a boat cruise on West Lake and learn about tea production at a local tea village. Next, Xi’an offers over 5,000 years of history such as the Terra Cotta Warriors excavation, the Ancient City Wall and Muslim Quarter. In Luoyang, thousands of statues and pagodas will greet the group from niches of the Longmen Grottoes along the Yi River.

In Beijing, Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace, the Great Wall, a jade museum and a pearl factory are a few highlights during three full days in China’s second largest city.

While it’s nearly impossible to discover every corner of China within one tour, the St. Olaf Orchestra will see, taste and experience the best China has to offer.

Testimonial

“Already in the planning stages, I’ve seen such enthusiasm about our visit from the Chinese musicians we’ll share concerts with, as well as the cultural and government officials who are officially welcoming us. I’m looking forward to seeing our St. Olaf students experience this warm welcome.”
