Baltics
In the Baltic countries of Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania, once under Soviet occupation, you will find some of the most charming cultures in the world. Medieval cobblestone streets give way to red-tile rooftops, towering turrets and onion domes. Whether it’s combined with a visit to Helsinki or St. Petersburg, or a full tour of all three countries, you’ll be surprised by the warmth and beauty of these places despite their gloomy histories.
The Northwestern College Choir (MN) returned this spring from Latvia, Estonia and Finland. Their performance venues included the Riga Dome Cathedral, Salem Baptist Church in Tartu, St. Aleksandr’s Church in Narva, St. Olav’s Church in Tallinn, St. Michael’s Church in Turku and the Temppeliaukio (Rock Church) in Helsinki. Audiences were warm and receptive; 100-200 locals filled these beautiful spaces each night. In Turku, singers from a local choir attended a concert and sang impromptu for the Northwestern students at a dinner following the concert. From Narva, one woman traveled over three hours to Tallinn to hear the concert a second time!
