Mozart’s 250th Anniversary Celebrations
Austria will host thousands of events in 2006 celebrating Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s (1756-1791) life and work. Choirs, bands and orchestras are invited to perform in Salzburg, where Mozart was born, and Vienna, where he spent the last ten years of his life. Youth & Music in Vienna - held annually in July
Vienna, Austria
As a part of the renowned International Youth & Music Festivals and Competition, the Youth & Music event is open to choirs, bands, and orchestras who excel at their craft. The competition is intense and rewarding, and gives performers a chance to see where they stack up against musicians from all over the world.
Events take place in and around the lovely towns and villages of Vienna, Austria, The City of Music. Here you'll discover the history of the great music masters of the Vienna classical era. You'll also see an amazing array of historical marvels from the Golden Age of classical music, as well as wonderful museums, and the remarkable sights and sounds of a European city that is second to none in terms of beauty and charm.
This festival is supported by the City of Vienna and has been taking place to great fanfare for over thirty years. The jury that judges each competition is composed of a remarkable section of well-known international music experts, whose opinion carries significant weight with the international music community.
Band Festival
From the Opening Concert parade through the lovely streets of Vienna to the performances outside St. Stephen's Cathedral, this festival begins with excitement all around you. There's dinner at the Vienna City Hall, a Dance Party and a chance for each band to perform individual concerts for the public in historic squares, parks and other sites throughout Vienna. The cornerstone of the festival is the Prize Winner's Matinee in which festival winners perform their adjudication program and awards are presented. The Closing Ceremony serves as the finale to this one-of-a-kind event and includes a band parade through the heart of Vienna, where musicians join in a final concert featuring music from around the world!
Choir & Orchestra Festival
Outstanding choirs and orchestras from all over the world are invited to participate in the festival, and as a result, the variety of outstanding musicianship is truly inspiring. Each group will perform concerts in historic concert halls, famous churches and classical cathedrals in Vienna and nearby cities. In addition, your choir or orchestra will perform at the competition with an array of prizes on the line. The climax of the festival is the Prize Winners Matinee, an event choreographed with detail and delight in mind!
Requirements
Each participating group must perform the compulsory pieces as stipulated by the International Jury, must include an original composition of a composer from the group's country of origin, and perform several pieces of music of their own selection. Maximum age of active participants is 29 years.
Linz Invitational Choral Festival - held annually in July
Linz, Austria
If you're choir has wowed everyone at home, it's time to perform on the international stage at the Linz Invitational Choral Festival! Open to outstanding high school and college choirs, this festival features individual choir performances all around Linz, as well as performances with a professional orchestra in the famous Brucknerhaus Concert Hall. Participating choirs are accepted by invitation only, so your promotional material must be received as soon as possible.
The City
As Austria's third largest city, Linz offers a wide array of musical and artistic events year round. Nestled in the beautiful Danube Valley, the city is surrounded by lovely hills, elegant baroque architecture, Medieval castles, and fascinating Old World courtyards. Put simply, this charming city will amaze you! Beyond the rehearsals and performance, groups will also enjoy afternoon tourist excursions in and around Linz, as well as Csesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic.
The Conductor
Dr. Kenneth Fulton will conduct performances with the Linz Festival Chorus and Orchestra. Dr. Fulton holds the Stephanie Landry Barineau Professorship of Choral Music at Louisiana State University and is Chorusmaster/Assistant Conductor for the Baton Rouge Symphony and Symphony Chorus. Dr. Fulton's choruses have completed fourteen European tours including performances in the Vatican, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, the Mendelssohn Hochschule in Leipzig, and the Tarnow Cathedral in Tarnow, Poland, hometown to the Pope.
How To Qualify
To secure an invitation, the chorus must provide the following by festival deadlines (please call for dates). Selected choruses will receive an invitation to participate from the Mayor of Linz!
- A 10-12 minute tape of the chorus in actual performance. The tape should contain a variety of musical styles and composers, and should be current.
- A set of programs from one recent school year.
- A brief resume of the chorus listing performances, contest ratings, and honors for the most recent school year.
- A brief resume of the conductor.
